Potter County; "God's Country" is the classic bumper sticker for cabin owners and hunters in the area. But these four words mean so much more to me than a bumper sticker on a pick-up truck. Potter County is seemingly untouched. Home to Cherry Springs State Park, the darkest place on the East Coast, Potter provides a feeling of absolute freedom. While biking to the Wharton General Store, riding shotgun in my boyfriend's truck through the winding curves of Wykoff Road or walking paths by the creek, I see a different kind of beauty than I do in my everyday life. Beauty to me involves simplicity, and Potter County has that simplistic beauty necessary for my soul. Hunting and vacation cabins are sprinkled all over the open fields, forests and hillsides, each with it's own unique characteristics. My boyfriend's father owns a small cabin right along the creek, tucked away between decaying pines and mountain views. Ever since my first visit to this cabin, it became my home away from home. Potter County has quickly become my necessary getaway, and my boyfriend's as well. This gorgeous county has become our place. Our place to reconnect with ourselves and with each other. No cell phones, no work, no school. No distractions. Potter County instead illuminates us with the sounds of nature: owls hooting in the dark night, fresh, clean water flowing, animals rustling in the dead leaves, fires crackling and laughter from neighboring cabins in the evening. Ice cream from the store, listening to the static country radio station and a never-changing landscape will never get old to me. Every time I get the chance to sneak away to Potter County from my busy, distracted life, I am instantly reminded of why it is called "God's Country" and why it is now my home away from home.
