ever since Instagram was created, i have been an obsessive user. there's just something about those rows and columns of squares i can't get enough of. i spend so much time choosing the perfect photo to go with my feed and the editing style to go along with it. while some may say (and have) that i'm too obsessed with my phone and social media, being a marketing guru says otherwise. according to sproutsocial.com, Instagram is an increasingly important tool in the digital marketing world. as of august 2017, Instagram has 700 million monthly active users and 8 million of them are businesses. as Instagram has grown and changed over the years, i've found that the way i use Instagram is also changing. i used to use the application for following friends and classmates to see what they were up to - but this form of use has now migrated to Facebook. today, i use Instagram to follow entrepreneurs, home decorators, new moms and my favorite brands. that being said, i'm not necessarily using the application to connect socially anymore. however, if businesses take the time to learn their audience, they will be able to use Instagram for marketing in an effective way. in order to reach your target audience, you have to know what your audience is using the app for. with this knowledge, you will be able to increase engagement with users. for example, i love a great photo and i am more inclined to visit a company's website if their photos are telling a story, clean and consistently edited. see a few of my favorite brands to follow! (photo from Pinterest) the jungalow is a brand i recently came across through following similar brands. their ability to bring tropical, bohemian, colorful vibes straight through my phone screen kept me hooked! urban outfitters' entire brand on social media simply kills the game. their strategy is the perfect mix of beautiful photography that encapsulates both products and lifestyle. being a lover of the better homes and gardens monthly magazine, following them on social gives me a constant feed of flowers, home inspo and other creative ideas. so as you can see, i'm sucked into a brand through their imagery. strong imagery can tell a story, market a product, spark an idea - or if you're doing it the right way, all of the above.
